In olden times all pearls were natural and therefore very rare. A pearl in Biblical times was believed to be the tear drop of an Angel and the Romans valued pearls above diamonds.

Throughout history, natural pearls, caused by a grain of sand or a tiny worm irritating an oyster, have been extremely rare.A Pearl is produced by a living organism called “ Molluses.” Shells that live in the Sea are called Oysters and those from freshwater Lakes are called Muscles.

Pearls vary greatly in the way they reflect & refract light. This is caused by the fact that nacre can be spread in one case spherically and in another horizontal. This is called the orient of a pearl.
